Braces for Teens in Atlanta, GA
A lot of teens don’t like the idea of getting braces, but the smile they get at the end of the journey is so worth it. If you live in the Atlanta area, and your teenager needs braces, contact board-certified orthodontists Dr. Ruchir Patel and Dr. Kal Thakkar at iClear Orthodontics located in Alpharetta, Roswell, and Kennesaw for a complimentary consultation.
Are Braces Popular for Teenagers?
If you need braces, you are not alone, just check out your classmates and friends. Most likely, the majority of them are wearing braces too and you never really paid much attention.
Did you know that many of your favorite celebrities wore braces when they were teens? Kendall Jenner, Brooklyn Beckham, Ariel Winter, Dakota Fanning, Emma Watson and Willow and Jaden Smith are just a few people you might know who rocked braces as teenagers. Beyoncé even wore braces when she was an adult!
How Long Will I Have To Wear Braces?
The length of your treatment is partially up to you as there are some factors you can control, and unfortunately others that you cannot.
- How Much Work Needs to Be Done – Teenagers with more severe malocclusion, or bite issues, will be in braces longer than teens that only need minor changes.
- How Long it Takes Your Teeth and Bite to Respond – This is the biggest determinant of how long you will have to wear braces. Everyone’s body responds differently to treatment, and unfortunately, only Mother Nature can predict whether the changes will happen for you quickly or slowly.
- Your Cooperation – If you take care of your appliances and are careful not to break any wires or brackets, your treatment will go smoothly.
- Follow-up Visits – Regularly scheduled visits will be approximately every six to eight weeks. During your appointments, Dr. Patel or Dr. Thakkar will adjust your braces so your teeth can continue moving into the correct position. Missing these appointments can prolong your treatment, so be sure to minimize cancellations if possible.
Teen Braces Your Way!
Do you want your braces to stand out, or do you want to camouflage them? iClear Orthodontics offers both types of braces. We offer clear or tooth-colored braces for teens who want their braces to blend in and bright colors and funky shapes for those who want to make a statement. Here are some of the options:
Why Should I Get Braces Now Or Ever?
While the process of getting your teeth straightened may not seem like much fun, just think about how good you will look in selfies, at the prom, and in the yearbook when you are done with braces. Your teeth will be straighter, and your bite will be in proportion with your facial features. A better-looking smile can also improve your confidence and your social life. It is fun to hang out with cheerful people, and when those braces come off, you will certainly have something to smile about.
What Can I Eat While Wearing Braces?
So your friends have told you about “the list” of foods that you are supposed to avoid while wearing braces. And, you know a lot of friends who eat whatever they want anyways. You may be tempted to do the same when you wear your braces, but just keep in mind that doing so risks loosening brackets and breaking wires. You will have to drop everything to go to the orthodontist to get your braces fixed. Even worse, when your brackets and wires are not functioning properly, you are potentially prolonging your treatment.
The list of items to avoid includes sticky, hard and crunchy foods, such as taffy, caramel, gum, popcorn, nuts, and bagels. In some situations, simply heating up the food will make it edible. This is the case with carrots and other hard vegetables. Some foods can be cut into small pieces, such as apples.
Even with a list of foods that need to be avoided, there are plenty of options that you can continue to enjoy including:
- Soft breads – pancakes, nut-free muffins, flour tortillas, cake and dinner rolls
- Dairy products – yogurt, most cheese, milkshakes, ice cream
- Fully cooked grains and pasta
- Meats – lunch meat, sausage, chicken, tuna fish, meatballs
- Soft vegetables – steamed broccoli, green beans, mashed potatoes and vegetable soups
- Fruits – Berries, applesauce, watermelon, canned fruit
Will Orthodontic Treatment Change My Lifestyle?
Once you get your braces on, you will find that braces are not really that big of a deal. Sure, you need to watch what you eat, and it will take you longer to brush and floss your teeth, but besides that, your life will not really change. You will need a mouth guard for some sports, but mouth guards are common today. Otherwise, you can still do everything you did before, including sports, play musical instruments, sing, act and more.
Can I Get Those Invisible Braces (Invisalign® Teen) Instead Of Traditional Ones?
Invisalign® Teen is really popular because the aligners are clear and removable. Invisalign® Teen is a great option but is typically only recommended when a slight correction to your teeth is needed. Most teenagers need bite correction and straightening that is beyond Invisalign® Teen’s capabilities. If you are not a candidate for Invisalign® but want your braces to be less noticeable, be sure to ask Dr. Patel and Dr. Thakkar about ceramic braces which may be a good alternative.
How Will I Look With Braces?
While you may think you look radically different, the odds are that once your friends see you with braces the first time, they won’t even notice them. If you choose fun colors or shapes, you can make your braces fashionable. Pick colors and shapes for the holidays, for upcoming parties or to cheer on your favorite team.
How Often Will I Have To Go To The Orthodontist?
You will typically visit Dr. Patel and Dr. Thakkar every eight to 10 weeks to have your braces checked and adjusted. We get that you’re busy with homework, sports, jobs and other responsibilities. To help you with scheduling, iClear Orthodontics offers convenient Saturday hours from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
How Long Do I Have To Wear A Retainer After Treatment?
iClear Orthodontics wants you to maintain your beautiful new healthy smile forever, which means making retainers part of your life. Retainers are really not something to worry about. They are usually only worn when you are sleeping and cleaning them easily becomes part of your morning routine.
Retainers are important because your teeth move as you age. They won’t stay in position permanently without some type of support system. Many adults wear retainers.
What Causes Crooked Teeth?
You can thank your parents and ancestors for your teeth and bite. You most likely inherited your dental structure from them. However, behavioral habits and environmental factors can also play a role. If you sucked your thumb or fingers for a long time, you might have pushed your teeth out of position. Losing teeth due to cavities or accidents can also cause misalignment of your teeth, bite, and jaws.
How Much Do Braces For Teens Cost in Atlanta, GA?
The cost of teen braces varies based on the severity of the malocclusion, the length of treatment, whether any additional devices are required and other factors.
Dental insurance sometimes covers a portion or the full cost of teen braces, so it is important to check your policy’s coverage. If you have Flexible Spending Account dollars available through your employer, your pre-tax dollars can be applied to the cost of teen braces.
To give all patients access to quality orthodontic treatment, iClear Orthodontics offers many payment plans to help make teen braces more affordable. iClear Orthodontics offers interest-free in-house financing which divides the total cost of treatment into reasonable monthly payments for the duration of your treatment.
Options also exist to extend payments beyond your treatment period. In addition to traditional credit cards, iClear Orthodontics accepts CareCredit® cards that extend financing up to 60 months with a reduced APR and fixed monthly payments. Customizable OrthoFi is available to design a flexible payment plan. With OrthoFi, you are able to select the down payment and ongoing monthly payment amounts.
